About FBMC

Historical Background

The Frimpong-Boateng Medical Center started as the Toase Medical Centre in 2001.The idea to establish Toase Medical Centre, was the brain child of Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng. In 1994 Nana Asiamah Poku Afrifa, the Chief of Toase, donated a portion of land to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng to build a residential accommodation but because of lack of good health facilities in the community Prof. Frimpong-Boateng decided to use the land to build a modest clinic to provide health care, not only for the people of Toase but the District as a whole.

In 1998 Prof. Frimpong-Boateng hosted a parliamentary delegation from Germany. One of them, Dr. (Mrs.) Michaela Blunk, a Member of the Bundestag (German Parliament) from the Free Democratic Party in the Northern German city of Luebeck, accompanied him to visit the Ashanti region. At Toase the plot of land and its plans were shown to Dr. Mrs. Blunk who thought that it was a good idea to build a clinic to serve the Toase community.

Also in 1998, Prof. Axel Haverich, a colleague and friend of Prof. Frimpong-Boateng visited from Germany and together, he and Prof. Frimpong-Boateng contributed funds for the project. On 28th February 2001, Toase clinic was established and the first patients were seen. Since then through judicious use of resources and contributions from Prof. Axel Haverich, the Toase clinic has grown to become a leading health facility in the District.

  • Diagnostic Centre

As already mentioned apart from a few hospitals in the city of Kumasi there are no diagnostic facilities in most of the districts in the region. It therefore becomes an important consideration to plan for a good diagnostic center with the following facilities:

  • Gynaecological Clinic

  • Renal Replacement Therapy/dialysis

It may be important to have facilities to manage patients, especially children, with acute renal failure complicating malaria or typhoid fever.

  • Modern Equipment

  • Outreach Services

On daily basis the senior nurses educate patients who report to the out-patient department on relevant health topics. Again on regular basis (every Tuesday) teams goes to the outlying villages and educate the villagers on similar health topics. These include the following:

  • Nursing Training

We see the need to train nurses, especially community health nurses at Toase.
These will be people who will be deployed in the communities where they will stay with the people and be the front line staffs in the provision of health care, especially health education and immunization to the people..

THE FUTURE

Short term Operating Theatre Suite:

Presently there is only one operating theatre for the hospital. It is a rather small which is not well equipped to manage major cases.

There is no hospital in the district that deals with major surgical cases and other emergencies. It is planned that the present operating will be put to the exclusive use of the obstetrics department, where Caesarean Sections can be done without any waiting time.

We believe that an operating theatre suite with intensive care facilities should be provided so that patients, especially children who need certain common interventions can be helped. Some of the cases that should be done in Toase include:

    1. Esophageal stricture in children who accidentally swallow caustic soda that their parents use in local preparation of soap and thereby burn their gullets.
    2. Congenital trachea-esophageal fistula
    3. Patent ductus arteriosus
    4. B-T shunts for some cases of cyanotic congenital heart disease
    5. Implantation of heart pacemakers
    6. Esophagoscopy & bronchoscopy especially for foreign body removal
    7. Lung & pleura infections
  1. Empyema
  2. Destroyed lungs
    1. Prostatectomy
    2. Intestinal obstruction from obstructed and strangulated hernias.

The intensive care unit will help in the management of cases such as:

  1. Post-operative cases
  2. Diabetes ketoacidosis
  3. Bronchial asthmatic attacks
  4. Heart attacks
  5. Burns
  6. Injuries from road traffic accidents
